About the Programme

Students are given a solid foundation in both the spoken and written aspect of English. Proficiency in English is approved and led by a professional team of lecturers certified by the Ministry of Education in Singapore.

The 3 levels of PIE are:

  1. ENG100 Elementary
  2. ENG200 Intermediate
  3. ENG300 Advanced

Awarded by Informatics Academy, the programme is certified by Ministry of Education, Singapore. Students will receive a certificate awarded by Informatics Academy upon completion of each level.

 

Programme Objectives

The Informatics Proficiency in English provides students with a strong foundation of English that will enable them to advance their studies into their professional area of study (e.g.: Business or IT courses). In addition, the programme also serves as a preparation course for the TOEFL/IELTS examination and will ultimately be the feeder for overseas universities¡¯ entrance.

The Proficiency in English Programme is registered with MOE. MOE directs the formulation and implementation of the Singapore government education policies. The mission of the Education Service is to mould the future of the nation, by moulding the people who will determine the future of the nation.

 

Programmme Duration

The course shall be conducted full-time at Thames Language School, Informatics Campus at 10-12 Science Centre Road.

For level 1 to 3 each teaching session is of 3 hours and 5 sessions per week. For each level, there would be a total of 210 contact hours conducted over 14 weeks.

In addition, students are also expected to devote another 10 hours per week, at least, for self-study and practice on the weekly assignment set for each unit per level.

The total time spent by a typical student for each level would be:
Classroom = 210 hours
Self-study & Assignments = 100 hours
Total = 310 hours

In each level, students will be expected to achieve the following skills:

  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Composition / Writing Skills
  • Comprehension
  • Oral Skills (Reading and Speaking)

 

Admission Requirements

Students are required to take an Informatics Proficiency in English Placement Test before they are placed and enrolled into the respective level of the Thames Proficiency in English programme.

The Informatics Proficiency in English Placement Test is designed to assess students¡¯ level of proficiency in English an the scores obtained for the test shall specify the level(s) that students need to be enrolled.

Students are required to take the Informatics Proficiency in English Placement Test prior to enrollment to the English courses. Students are only given one opportunity to take the English Placement Test.

 

Programme Structure and Duration
The course comprises 3 levels of study conducted on full-time basis

Full Time: 4 months

Day classes taught by lecturers with industry-experience

Method of Assessment:

Assessments for all levels of the Informatics Academy, Proficiency in English Programme includes:

  • Final Examination - 20%

Breakdown of coverage in the final examination:

Section 1: - Grammar / Vocabulary
Section 2: - Comprehension
Section 3: - Composition

  • Oral Examination - 10%
  • Participation - 10%
  • Attendance - 10%
  • Written Test - 20%
  • Continuous coursework assessment* - 30%
* Continuous Assessment consists of an assignment per unit to be submitted by students and graded by the respective lecturers. Marks for each assessment will contribute to the final continuous assessment of 30%.

To apply, applicants must complete and submit the prescribed application forms. The application must be accompanied by the following:

  • A one time non-refundable application processing fee.
  • 2 copies of Official Transcripts from University / College
  • 2 copies of Official Certificates
  • Application Form
  • 2 Passport Photos
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency (for non-English speaking countries)
