Programme Aims

The Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) will enable non-accounting university graduates and other approved applicants the opportunity to acquire an accounting qualification recognised by the Australian accounting professional bodies. The programme comprises 12 or 16 courses depending on applicants¡¯qualifications.

 

Programme Objectives

Successful completion of the Master of Professional Accounting should enable graduates to:

  • Prepare and analyse financial and management accounting reports
  • Audit financial records and statements and produce audit reports
  • Prepare taxation returns and advise clients on taxation issues
  • Comprehend and apply accounting theory to current accounting developments and problems
  • Understand and apply the principles of business finance and investment evaluation
  • Comprehend the legal framework within which businesses operate and apply this knowledge in addressing commercial legal problems. It is a holistic integrated approach towards accounting which aims to give a broad understanding of business management and corporate vision essentialto tomorrow¡¯s top managers and corporate leaders.

 

Recognition and Strengths

The MPA course meets educational entrance requirements of both the CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA).

For non-Australian residents seeking membership of their local accounting bodies, full members of the CPA Australia and ICAA are usually offered reciprocal membership in foreign accounting bodies. This is often the fastest track for foreign students to become qualified accountants.

MPA 16
Students who enroll into MPA16 shall be required to first enroll in the (Executive) Graduate Certificate in Commerce by completing the following four modules:

Graduate Certificate in Commerce
ACC5202 Accounting
LAW5201 Commercial Law
FIN8101 Corporate Finance
CIS 8100 Global Information Systems Strategy

Upon successful completion of these four courses, students shall then articulate into the Master of Professional Accounting (12 courses) programme. The four courses completed under the (Graduate Certificate in Commerce) shall contribute toward 16 courses of the Master of Professional Accounting.

Elective Modules
Student must select these from the Master of Commerce, Master of Commercial Law or the? Master of Business Administration (with the exception of ACC5502 Accounting for Managers and LAW5503 Australian Law and Business). In addition, CIS8100 must be one of the selected electives.

 

Admission Requirements

Graduate Certificate in Commerce
Any diploma holders with a minimum of 2 years working experience

MP12
To gain admission to the 12-course program, applicants must hold an approved degree in a non-accounting field from a recognised university or tertiary institution, provided that such qualification is accepted by the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business as sufficient for admission to the program, and is in accordance with the appropriate professional body guidelines.

MP16
To gain admission to the 16-course program, applicants should satisfy one of the following admission requirement options:

Admission requirements option 1
Applicants must have successfully completed an accredited post year 12 qualification equivalent to at least two years full-time study provided that such qualification is accepted by the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business, as sufficient for admission to the program and is in accordance with the appropriate professional body guidelines:

Admission requirements option 2
Applicants must have completed a minimum of at least five years relevant work experience.

 

Programme Structure and Duration
Intake: March / July / November
Duration: Part Time / Distance Learning: Minimum of 20 months
