The University of Portsmouth, like other British Universities, is an independent self-governing body, deriving its rights and privileges by Act of Parliament.
The University is committed to helping you to achieve your potential in the education, research and employment world of an exciting new millenium.
The City of Portsmouth has enjoyed 138 years as a home of higher education. Since the award of the first degree in 1900, the University has maintained its commitment in promoting and maintaining excellence in teaching, research and scholarship across a wide range of disciplines. The University has a total student population of more than 20,000 of which some 3,000 are further education students and some 2,500 are studying on collaborative links with partner institutions. Some 6% of our students are from overseas which, together with mature students on most courses, ensures a good mix of cultural backgrounds.
The University is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). Membership of the ACU is international recognition. It is also the recognition criteria accepted by the Public Services commission in Singapore in the employment of graduates.
The University of Portsmouth is highly proud of its extensive research programme, gaining outstanding results in the Higher Education Funding Council Research Assessment Exercise held in 1996. Research income accounts for about 10% of total income for the University. The University also has an excellent record of graduate employment that we believe is linked to the emphasis we place on student development In career sectors that enjoy high employment, a Portsmouth degree quite clearly provides the edge you need to get your feet on the first rung of the career ladder.
