Sports Day 2008

On June 27th the Yio Chu Kang Stadium was buzzing with Informatics Staff and students for the Annual Sports Day event. The weather was on our side that day, with the sun blazing away, while spectators cheered on for their favourite athletes.
The event line-up included 100, 200, 400 and 800 metre races, 4 x 100m races and shot put for men, and 100, 200 and 400 metre races for women. Other events included long jump for men and women, and staff’s 4 x 100m relay.
The 2 emcees for the event, English lecturers Julian Cheong and Thomas Davies kept audiences entertained with their spontaneous jokes and quirky remarks, poking fun at each other, and at times, those who caught their attention.
Ms Mullai’s ESD class held a mass workout cum yoga demonstration while spectators were encouraged to participate from their seats. The Yoga team definitely impressed and inspired all who watched with their skilled postures and meditation techniques. During the interval, a group of cheerleaders entertained us all with their demonstration of pompom skills and hip dance moves.

The highlight of the day had to be the street soccer final which was held at the field.

Goodie bags filled with Newater, Gardenia raisin buns, apples and prawn crackers, were handed out to all who attended.

The big winners were Devatha Piyathilake who earned himself the title of Outstanding Sportsman, and Li Xiang Yi, for Outstanding Sportswoman. Managing Director for SDO, Mr Alan Phua handed out the hard-earned medals to the winners for the atheletic events, while Executive Director, Mr David D’Souza, handed out medals to the soccer, badminton and basketball champions.
Said the chairman of the Sports Day Committee, Mr. Gary Kong,”This year’s sports day event was a big hit! The smiles of joy on the students' faces, and the achievements of our athletes were exactly what we had planned for. I would like to take this chance to thank the committee members, the student helpers and all participants who have made the sports day a success. Three cheers to Informatics!”
